I design how it works, then I make it work.

I'm Cole, a digital experience designer who also builds. I've spent about ten years shipping the design, the copy and the code.

My story

I've been doing development work professionally since I was 18, and for most of that time I did it all myself.

For the last three and a half years I've been at an agency building campaigns, microsites and email, a lot of it for financial brands. I've kept designing the whole time, and I work with design teams both as a collaborator and as a consultant.

I was born and raised in Waterloo, Iowa, and I still live here.

How I work

  1. Design how it works

I start with what someone's trying to do and the path that gets them there, long before any pixels get polished.

  2. Then make it work

I build what I design, so the idea doesn't get lost somewhere between the mockup and the browser.

  3. Measure, then change one thing

Launching is really just the starting line. I set up the tracking, read what it's telling me, and keep making it better.

  4. Accessible from the first commit

Keyboard, screen reader and contrast checks happen while I build, instead of in a scramble at the end.
